How do I interact with Rogue when I’m in game?

To interact with Rogue in game, hit F11. This takes mouse/keyboard control from the game and activates it for the web browser.

If you want to restore mouse/keyboard control for your game, simply hit F11 again.

Can I watch online videos in game using Rogue?

Absolutely! All you have to do is pull up your favorite video site in the browser.

In order to ensure the best possible viewing experience, please set the “Optimization Toggle” at the bottom of the screen to “Video.” For more information on this feature, please see the Optimization Toggle section below.

Currently, some of our Beta testers are experiencing problems when they watch YouTube videos in game. We are working on this issue and expect it to be corrected in the next version of the application.

In the meantime, if you are having problems with YouTube, we recommend that you watch online videos in game through Hulu.com, Break.com, or DailyMotion.com, all of which have worked well in our testing.

Can I listen to online music in game using Rogue?

To play online music in game, we recommend that you set up an account with an online music service, such as Pandora.com. Then navigate to the online music site through Rogue, hit F12 to show the browser whenever you want to interact with the player, and then press F12 again to hide Rogue when you want to get back to gaming with your favorite songs playing. The music will keep playing even if Rogue is not overlaying your game.

Can I check my email in game using Rogue?

Our Beta testers have not had any problem checking their Gmail, Yahoo, or MSN mail in game.

If you check your Gmail mailbox through Rogue, then the page will load as HTML.

Can I use Rogue, while I’m actively playing a game?

Rogue is optimized to impact the gaming experience as little as possible.

One of the most popular uses of Rogue is playing online videos or music, while “grinding” for experience or gold in massively multiplayer online games, such as World of Warcraft.

To play an online video while you actively play a game, we recommend that you make the browser window as small as possible and set the transparency on the browser to 50%. In this way, you can actually watch the movie, while at the same time seeing everything that is going on in your game.

Supported Games

What games does Rogue support?

During our Beta period, we are gathering information on what games work flawlessly, and what games we need to tweak. We need your help.

Please tell us in the New Games Forum if you have tested games that work, which are not listed below or if you have a game that does not work with Rogue that you would like us to support.

Please tell us in the Technical Support Forum if you have tested games that work for us, but not for you. The more comprehensively you describe your system specifications the easier it will be to fix the problem.

The following games have been tested by our staff and work with Rogue’s overlay technology:

• Age of Conan
• Battlefield 2
• Call of Duty
• Call of Duty 2 (not on menu screens)
• Civilization IV
• Counter-Strike: Source
• Gears of War
• Guild Wars
• Half-Life 2
• Portal
• Silkroad Online
• Unreal Tournament III
• Warhammer 40,000
• Warhammer: Dawn of War
• World of Warcraft

Currently, Rogue’s overlay technology does not support the following games:

• Call of Duty 4
• Diablo 2
• Doom 3
• Quake 4
• Starcraft
• Warcraft III
• Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

We hope to update Rogue to support all of these titles over the next few months.

Does Rogue’s overlay support mods and expansion packs?

We support any mods and expansion packs for supported games.

If you experience any technical problems with a game that we support, please let us know through the Technical Support Forum, and be sure to mention all modifications you have made to the game.

Transparency Slider

How can I see more through the application?

We built Rogue so that it impacts your game play as much or as little as you want. Depending on what game you are playing and your gaming style, you may want to make Rogue almost totally see-through, or browse the web in all of its colorful glory.

In the bottom right hand corner of the application is a blue transparency slider that can change Rogue’s transparency.

You can also change Rogue’s transparency with hotkeys in game by pressing F10 to increase the application’s transparency and F9 to decrease it.

Optimization Toggle

What is Rogue’s Optimization Toggle?

Rogue’s Optimization Toggle is located at the bottom of the application. It optimizes in-game web surfing for different types of browsing experiences. There are three settings on the Optimization Toggle: Video, Web, and Game.

We recommend that you use the “Video” setting, if you are going to watch online videos; the “Web” setting, if you plan to browse pages that are mostly text; and, the “Game” setting, if you are going to actively play games, while you surf.

In short, the faster the web browser experience the greater the impact on game play. We created the Optimization Toggle for this reason, so that you can decide whether maximizing your browser speed or your game speed is more important, based on what you are currently doing in game.

If you are waiting for friends to start a game or for your game to load, then we recommend using the “Video” or “Web” settings. On the other hand, if you are about to run a level 80 dungeon in World of Warcraft or get into a firefight in Counter-Strike, then we recommend using the “Game” setting.

We highly recommend that you try all three settings, so that you can get a feel for which Optimization setting makes sense for any given situation.

Troubleshooting

What can I do if Rogue crashes on my machine?

Rogue is in Beta. Crashes should be expected to happen once in awhile, as we are trying to make a brand new service as compatible as possible with the myriad of PC hardware and software configurations available.

Please make sure to record any problems you are having on our Technical Support Forum. The more detailed your report, the faster we can fix them for everyone.

If you seem to be having more issues than others, you may want to consider the following:

• Make sure you have at least 5 GB of memory available on your Hard Drive
• Make sure you have the latest drivers and updates for your hardware and OS
• Defrag your system and scan for disk errors
• Close unnecessary programs through your Task Manager
• Run an anti-virus utility

What can I do if Rogue slows down my game?

By running a web browser in game, it will slow down your game to some degree. For most users, the impact on gameplay should be negligible.

If you are trying to actively play a game and use Rogue at the same time, then we recommend setting the Optimization Toggle at the bottom of the screen to “Game.” This will speed up the frames per second of your game. Please see the Optimization Toggle section for more information on how to use this feature.

What can I do if Rogue is loading slowly in game?

By running Rogue in game, it slows down the web browser. For most users, there should only be a slight impact to the browsing experience when Rogue is used in game.

If web pages are taking too long to render, then we recommend setting the Optimization Toggle at the bottom of the screen to “Web” or “Video.” This will increase the browser’s speed. Please see the Optimization Toggle section for more information on how to use this feature.

What can I do if Rogue does not display in game?

If Rogue does not display in game, it probably means that the game you are playing is currently unsupported by the browser’s overlay function.

If you know that the game that you are playing is supported by Rogue for most players, then post the problem you are having on our Technical Support Forum. Please provide as much information about your system as possible.

We realize that the overlay does not work perfectly for every user yet, as Rogue is still in Beta. We will do our best to fix any compatibility issues that you may be experiencing in future releases.

What can I do if Rogue closes immediately after launching?

If Rogue closes immediately after you open it, go to its installation directory and locate the “overlay” folder.

Copy the “Launch Rogue” shortcut from this folder to your desktop (or another desired location).

You should be able to run the application through this shortcut.

For further discussion on this issue see this forum thread.

What can I do if Rogue’s installation fails?

If you are having trouble installing Rogue, try the following solutions:

1) Using Add/Remove Programs, try uninstalling Rogue, then run “Rogue.exe” again.
2) If uninstalling Rogue does not work, try uninstalling Adobe AIR, then run “Rogue.exe” again.
3) If you are still having trouble, download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe) recommended by Microsoft at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301. You should see a list of installed applications when you run it. Select Rogue and Adobe AIR. This will fully uninstall any corrupted files. Then, simply run “Rogue.exe” again.

Also, make sure you have the newest version of the installer. Please see this thread for more information.

If you experience further difficulties, please visit our Technical Support Forum for further assistance.

What can I do if I get an error message during the installation process?

If you receive the following error message: "Error opening the file for writing: [pathname] Click Abort to stop the installation, Retry to try again, or Ignore to skip this file."

Click "Ignore" and try running Rogue once the installation has finished.

If Rogue does not run or if you receive a different error message, please post in the Technical Support Forum.

Can I download files through Rogue?

Not right now. We plan to enable players to download files through Rogue in the future, but currently this feature is not supported.

What can I do if a Flash movie flickers when it plays in game?

Occasionally, Flash elements do not render properly in Rogue. This tends to occur when players are either in a very resource intensive part of a game (e.g., a game or instance is loading) or if they have a number of applications open at once besides Rogue and the game they are playing.

In order to reduce the severity of this problem, we suggest that players close any non-essential applications when they are watching Flash movies in game.

Importantly, if you are watching an online video, then the Optimization Toggle should be set to “Videos.” Online videos will play, even if the Toggle is not set to “Videos”; however, the viewing experience tends to be choppier.

We are working to make Rogue’s game overlay even more efficient, so that playing Flash movies through the browser will work better in the future.

Can I watch YouTube videos in game through Rogue?

Some users will have not have any difficulty watching YouTube movies through Rogue, while they play. However, for many users, YouTube videos will flicker when they watch them in game. This flickering has to do with a couple of unusual settings utilized by YouTube’s video player.

We are currently working to fix this issue. In the meantime, we suggest that you watch online videos in game through Hulu.com, Break.com, or DailyMotion.com, all of which have worked well in our testing.

YouTube should work perfectly out of game.
